Meth Addiction

What is Methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine is a synthetic drug used as a stimulant, and also used as medication to treat narcolepsy and maintain blood pressure. It affects the central nervous system and has a composition of a decongestant called pseudoephedrine, as well as a number of toxic ingredients.

methproject.org classifies the drug as one of the extremes and most addictive. It comes with a variety of other street names such as but not limited to:

  • Ice
  • Crystal
  • Chalk
  • Poor Man’s Cocaine
  • Uppers
  • Stove Tops

Being a stimulant, it affects the body’s system as it tolerates the entry of the drug and this is manifested in the following signs of dependency and addiction:

  • Dilated Pupils
  • Euphoria
  • Weight Loss
  • Irregular Heartbeat
  • Repetitious Behavior
  • Eye Twitching

Methamphetamine affects the brain by increasing the levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for motivation, pleasure, and what is common to drug dependents as the “high feeling”. Because of the unusual and too much release of dopamine in the nervous terminals, it eventually causes damage to the system.

Aside from the effect of addiction, a person in the habit of meth abuse can experience the following conditions:

  • Psychosis
  • Memory loss
  • Dental Problems
  • Usual aggressive behavior
  • Mood disturbance

When the user suddenly stops the use of the drug, for approximately about 30 to 90 days, the person would experience the extent of withdrawal symptoms, some of which can be very harmful, painful and emotionally-dragging to the person. Individuals who use other drugs to back the effects of meth, or when it is not available, may have more difficulty in going through Meth Withdrawal symptoms. The magnitude of the symptoms may also depend on the amount of meth consumed, the biomass of the user, and more.

Some of these symptoms include:

  • Inactivity and Sleepiness
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • Meth Cravings
